ShadeFX Retractable Shades Take on the Elements

ShadeFX retractable shade solutions are engineered with you in mind. All our products add both style and function to any outdoor space by providing reliable and flexible protection from the elements. Shade shoppers may wonder, how do our retractable solutions hold up during sun, rain, wind, and snow.

Severe Sun

Time spent in the great outdoors is good for the mind, body, and soul. The sun produces vitamin D which helps calcium absorption for stronger and healthier bones. However, unprotected exposure to the sun and its harmful ultraviolet rays can cause damage to the skin, eyes, and immune system. According to John Hopkins Medicine, it can also cause cancer.

ShadeFX has prioritized complete protection from the sun in its product offering. The key lies within the canopy fabric. Offered as a base fabric, the Sunbrella line is UV resistant. Its fabric fibers are saturated with highly UV stable pigments. In addition, the shade fabric is high in UPF protection and is recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation as an aid in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin. The Sunbrella shade fabrics are also breathable, allowing air to pass through them, and creating a comfortable space underneath.

As a bonus, there is no reason to worry about the sun damaging the fabric as it is fade-resistant and includes a no-fade warranty.

Relentless Rain

At the core of every product is ShadeFX’s patented single-track technology. It produces a peak at the center of the fabric, forcing precipitation off to either side of the system. This method also prevents rainwater from pooling in the center. After the skies are clear, the system can be retracted without the threat of rotting or developing mold, as water will continue to run off through the folds.

The level of water protection desired depends on the brand of fabric you choose. ShadeFX’s fabrics are available in water-resistant, water repellent, and waterproof options. From the breathable Sunbrella fabric to the sturdy Serge Ferrari line, there are hundreds of patterns and colors to choose from to fit any style, budget, and overall look.

Wild Wind

ShadeFX’s retractable solutions are engineered to hold up against windy conditions. Each product has been tested to withstand up to 80+ mph winds. To provide a comparison, that is similar to the wind rating of a Category 1 Hurricane which has sustained winds from 74-95 mph. Read about how our shades stood up to the high winds of Hurricane Sandy in Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

However, we highly recommend that your shades be retracted during higher winds, or winds constantly exceeding 35mph, especially when not in use.

Slushy Snow

When the temperatures begin to drop, it is time to remove your canopy or retract your roof. While the system should be able to withstand cold weather conditions like light flurries, they are not engineered to bear a snow load.

The accumulating weight of the snow could bear down on the operating system and possibly damage it. In addition, below freezing temperature can cause long-term damage to the canopy fabric, affecting its overall longevity. It is recommended that the canopy fabric be removed and stored over the winter. If you do decide to keep your system up, it should not be operated in freezing temperatures and it’s best to keep it retracted and covered.

For the retractable roof, it is suggested that the roof simply be retracted and not operated during freezing temperatures.

Whether sun, rain, or wind, ShadeFX has the right solution to keep you covered. Ask us how.
