New Holland Brewing, known for its award-winning craft beers and vibrant atmosphere, is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Its Knickerbocker location in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a sprawling brewpub featuring indoor and outdoor beer gardens and ample dining spaces ideal for private events. Patrons can indulge in the restaurant’s masterfully crafted menu, which highlights artisanal and locally sourced options, such as their robust line of craft beer and spirits, pub brews and cocktails.

Michigan’s unpredictable weather meant its outdoor beer garden could have been better utilized. New Holland Brewing partnered with RA Engineering and ShadeFX in search of a solution that would allow them to maximize their outdoor seating area’s functionality.

Known for its turnkey engineering and construction solutions, RA Engineering packaged four 24’x12’ ShadeFX retractable roofs with their fabricated beams and supports. The entire kit was delivered to Rockford Construction for a smooth installation over the 1,150 sq. ft. outdoor patio. The roofs were fitted with gutters for rain management, and the Serge Ferrari Orange fabric matches the company logo colors adding to the space’s overall aesthetic and making it an inviting and comfortable atmosphere.

Installing the retractable roofs has significantly expanded New Holland Brewing’s outdoor seating capacity, increasing overall revenue. A garage door connects the outdoor patio to an indoor dining area and together, both spaces can accommodate up to 200 patrons (70 seats outdoors).

When needed, the roofs can be extended for full overhead protection. Even in the colder months, the area will remain warm courtesy of the overhead heating system. The system also has an optical sensor that retracts the roofs at any sign of snow accumulation.
