In this backyard makeover, the homeowners had plenty of space to work with, allowing them to create multilevel entertaining areas. From the first-floor walkout terrace to the expansive space around the pool, there are many areas to hang out and relax.

However, with such a large expansive backyard the family was constantly exposed to the elements. Looking to add shade and further define the space, the homeowners with the help of Samcore Ltd. installed a large wooden pergola on each level.

During the warmer months, this wasn’t enough to stop the sun’s harsh rays from ruining a relaxing afternoon. As a result, installing versatile shade wasn’t an option, it was a necessity.

Uniquely, the pergola off the terrace conformed around the corner of the house for maximum coverage. Accordingly, ShadeFX customized a 16’x12’ motorized retractable shade with a cutout to match the pergola and house line. Fixed panels on the house side of the pergola allow the canopy to retract towards the house without affecting the overall aesthetics. Down the stairs to the poolside pergola, ShadeFX specified a full-size 16’x16’ canopy.

To match the existing structures, both canopies are a sleek Slate color in the Sunbrella fabric line. The canopies included 10 extra wings to correlate with the valances. When retracted, the canopy is tucked away neatly along the pergola frame and decorative drapery.
