This residence in Mississauga wanted the most discreet installation possible, but also needed a garage because of a well treed yard. The solution was to install the drive beam parallel to the rafters so there is no obvious beam to support the canopy. It is part of a rafter.
Then, rather than install separate outriggers to stabilize the canopy, one of the rafters on each side of the drive beam became a notched 2 x 10. This placed its bottom edge 3-1/2" lower than the bottom edge of the other rafters, and thus served the function of an outrigger.
Finally, the garage was fronted with a cedar facing. This is a manual drive canopy system measuring 12'L x 13'W. It is at the limit of size that is suitable for the manual drive system. Larger canopies should be motor driven.
